How to prevent your phone from ringing at a bad time

Have you ever fallen asleep only to be awakened in the middle of the night by a phone call from someone who had no idea how late it was (or who simply didn’t care)?

Or perhaps you’ve signed up for a class and you’d rather not disturb everyone in the room with an endless barrage of notification sounds?

You can easily avoid situations like that by enabling “Do Not Disturb” mode on your phone. Just follow the steps below that apply to your phone.

If you have an iPhone:

1 – Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen.

2 – Tap the Focus icon (it looks like a crescent moon).

3 – Tap Do Not Disturb.

Note: To disable “Do Not Disturb”, simply toggle the setting back to Off.

If you have an Android phone:

Note: Unlike with iPhones, the steps required to enable Do Not Disturb on Android phones vary quite a bit from one brand and model to another. There will be a simple way to enable it via your phone’s system settings. You’ll just have to go through the settings app to find it. However, the steps below should work on any Android phone.

1 – Tap the gear-shaped Settings icon.

2 – Type the words do not disturb into the Search field.

3 – Select Do Not Disturb from the list of search results.

4 – Tap the Turn on now button.

Note: To disable “Do Not Disturb”, simply toggle the setting back to off by tapping Turn off now.

Of course another option is to simply mute your phone’s ringer by turning the ringer volume all the way down, but if you don’t lower the volume quite enough it can still cause a disturbance if your phone happened to receive an incoming call. Enabling Do Not Disturb will prevent your phone from ringing for sure.
