A while back I wrote a post explaining why it’s a bad idea to let your web browser store the passwords you use to log in to your online accounts.

If you don’t have time to read that post, here’s the gist of it…

Allowing your browser to store your passwords is very dangerous!

This morning I received a message from an astute reader asking me how to remove passwords that have already been stored by Google Chrome.

That’s a great question, and I decided to answer it by providing instructions here.  [Read more…]

Question from Eddie:  Hi Rick. I hope you can help me with an odd situation I’m in.

I opened an online account several years ago (I’d rather not say which company) and I let Firefox store the password.

Ever since then I’ve always logged into that account using the stored password.

I’m getting ready to buy a new computer so I won’t be able to use the stored password to log into that site anymore.

The problem is I have forgotten the password. I’ve tried resetting it but it asks for my email address and none of the ones I can think of trying will work.

I know the password is still stored in Firefox because it comes up (covered with asterisks) and I can log in with it. Is there any way to retrieve that password from the browser?

Q&A: What’s your recommendation for securely storing passwords?

Posted on April 26, 2024

Question from John:  Rick, I’ve seen multiple articles regarding the dangers of using password managers or storing passwords in browsers.

Ok, I get it, but the flip side is also very daunting.

For me, I have over a dozen Internet accounts, and keeping track of all those passwords without some kind of automated manager is almost impossible.

Believe it or not, each and every password is extremely complex and UNIQUE.

Here’s an example of one password: A422A#5zkhN32B

This does not bode well for memorization.

I refuse to use any password manager that stores this information anywhere other than my local computer. Roboform used to, but now stores in the cloud.

I would be very interested in your recommendations for this situation. Thanks.
