Q&A: How do I stop my Windows PC from making me sign in after it wakes from sleeping?

Question from Kevin:  My laptop has Windows 10 on it and every time I press a key to wake it from sleeping I have to sign in again.

I’m the only one that has access to this laptop during the workday so I really don’t need to worry about someone else using it.

That’s why I only actually log off when I shut it down before I leave to go home in the evening.

My question is how can I have the laptop go straight to the Desktop after waking from sleep without having to sign in again?

Rick’s answer:  That’s a great question, Kevin. I know how frustrating it is to have to sign in when there’s no real reason for having to do so.

Luckily, it’s very easy to force a PC running either Windows 10 or Windows 11 to skip the sign in screen and go directly to the desktop after it awakens from Sleep mode. Just follow the steps below:

1 – Click the Start button to display the Start Menu.

2 – Type the words sign-in options and then select Sign-in options from the list of search results.

3 – Scroll down and change the “If you’ve been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again?” setting to Never.

That’s all there is to it. Your PC should now go directly to the Desktop whenever it wakes up from Sleep mode without requiring you to sign back in.

I hope this helps, Kevin. Good luck!

Update from Kevin: Thanks, Rick. That worked like a charm.
