Q&A: Can I make my Tumblr posts private?

Posted on July 18, 2014

tumblr-logo-2Question from Ellis R.:  Rick, I just created a blog on Tumblr and I’d like to make it private. In other words I don’t want anyone except myself to see it.

I know this is a strange request, but I have a reason for it. So can you tell me how to make my blog private? I’d really appreciate it.

Rick’s answer:  Ellis, I agree that your request is a little unusual, but it certainly isn’t unique. In fact, I’ve been asked how to “hide” blogs on several occasions.

Follow these steps to make your Tumblr blog private:

1 – Click the “gear” shaped icon in the upper right-hand corner of the window to load the “Preferences” screen.

2 – Scroll to the bottom of the window and switch the “Allow search engines to index your blog” setting to Off.

3 – Now go to the “Dashboard” and switch the “Share posts you like” setting to Off.

That’s all there is to it Ellis. From now on your Tumblr blog will be invisible to everybody except you!
