Q&A: Is it safe to buy from Temu?

Posted on February 29, 2024

Question from Margaret:  I started shopping at Temu a few months ago and I love the low prices, but I heard from a friend that it’s not safe to shop there. Is that true?

Rick’s answer:  Margaret, all I can do is give you my own personal opinion about this. You’ll need to make up your own mind about continuing to shop at Temu after you read the info below.

There are actually several important reasons why I personally will NEVER shop at Temu (and why I recommend that others skip it as well):

1 – Temu is owned by a company that has close ties to the Chinese government. That fact alone is enough to make me question the wisdom of doing business with them, for obvious reasons.

2 – Temu is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau. In fact, the BBB has given them a not-so-great C+ rating.

3 – Temu is currently being sued over their privacy practices. In short, it appears that their app gives Temu (and by extension the Chinese government) access to literally everything on your phone.

4 – Numerous customers have filed complaints stating that their devices were hacked after using Temu.

Bottom line:  Just the fact that Temu’s parent company has close ties the Chinese government makes many potential customers wary of using their app or website, myself included.

Personally, I think using Temu is a bit like driving down the freeway at 100 miles per hour on four bald tires – everything is going great until you have a blowout.

I recommend that you take all the info I linked to above into consideration and then decide for yourself whether you feel comfortable shopping at Temu.

I hope this helps, Margaret. Good luck!

Update from Margaret: Thanks for the info, Rick. I had no idea! I just deleted the Temu app from my phone and I won’t be shopping with them in the future.
