Question from Thalia: Hi, Rick. I hope you can help me with something.
I just read your post about how Yahoo is deleting all the emails from inactive accounts.
I want to delete my Yahoo email account because I never use it anymore, but I have thousands of important emails in my Yahoo email account that I really need to keep.
Can you tell me how to move all of those emails from Yahoo into the Gmail account I just opened?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Rick’s answer: Thalia, lots of people are making the switch from Yahoo to Gmail these days, for the same reason you are.
Luckily, it’s actually pretty easy to import your Yahoo emails into Gmail. Here’s how:
1 – Log into your Gmail account.
2 – Click the Settings icon located in the top-right corner of the window (it looks like a “gear” or “cog”).
3 – Click See all settings.
4 – Click the Accounts and Import link on the menu bar near the top of the window.
5 – Click the Import mail and contacts link. A new dialog box should now pop up.
6 – Enter the Yahoo email address (e.g. [email protected]) that you need to import your emails from.
7 – Click the Continue button and then follow the prompts that follow.
That’s all there is to it. You can now get on with other tasks while Gmail completes the transfer in the background.
Once the transfer is complete you’ll see a new label in your Gmail account that contains all of your imported Yahoo messages.
You’ll find the emails that were in other folders besides your Yahoo Inbox stored under that new label as well, in sub-folders of their own.
Once you have confirmed that all of your Yahoo emails have been imported into your Gmail account you can safely delete your Yahoo account. This post explains how.
