How to accept payments online, in person, and on the go as a business

Posted on April 1, 2026

Businesses nowadays have a lot of pressure to cater to many different audiences and demographics, some of which are used to paying with cash, and others who are digitally savvy enough to use all manner of online banking types.

To be able to accept payments online, in-person, and even on-the-go, you’re going to need some versatile payment service providers that can provide mobile card readers, online gateways, and integrated POS systems.

If that sounds like confusion to you as a business, then here are some of the ways you can implement better and more productive financial processes this year.

Accepting payments online

For online payments, it’s beneficial to have the right payment gateways and merchant services available so that you can easily accept payments online.

As well as that, you’ll want to set up your website or e-commerce platforms properly with the right provider. You can have the best payment gateways available, but if the platform you’re hosting your site on isn’t efficient, then it can all end up falling apart. Some websites and platforms have built-in payment solutions that handle the processing for you.

You should also explore what alternative payment methods you can provide. Digital wallets are very common nowadays, as are buy now, pay later services.

Payments in-person

When it comes to people paying in person, cash is no longer king. While some people still pay with cash, having the option of taking payments via POS systems or an integrated solution is key.

Many modern POS systems nowadays will be able to manage sales effectively, a lot of these being used across the retail and hospitality industries predominantly.

Card machines/terminals are another great way of taking payment and are the typical method for most to make payment via contactless or chip and pin.

Finally, integrated solutions help to manage both online and in-person sales, which helps to unify the data for accuracy.

Taking payments on-the-go

Being able to take payments on-the-go is highly important for a lot of businesses that are mobile and therefore need to be flexible with their payment methods.

Again, cash might be available to take, but for many modern businesses nowadays, it’s turning to digital efforts.

Mobile card readers

With portable card readers that can be connected easily to your smartphone or tablet, it means businesses can accept payments anywhere and at any time necessary. This adds an incredible amount of flexibility when taking payments on-the-go.

Tap to pay on mobile

There are apps you can use that turn your iPhone or Android into a contactless payment terminal, removing the need for additional hardware, which can be costly.

QR codes and payment links

Many businesses are now generating QR codes or sending payment links via email to ensure customers can pay instantly.

Virtual terminals

Using virtual terminals in a web browser is helpful to accept payments over the phone where required.

It’s highly beneficial to be able to accept payments in different formats, especially for modern businesses nowadays.
