Q&A: Why does my Gateway computer have an ASUS motherboard?

Posted on March 6, 2014

Asus MotherboardQuestion from Glenn P.:  I have a couple of questions for you Rick. My desktop computer is a Gateway, but Belarc Advisor says the motherboard was made by ASUS.

Question 1: Did I get ripped off when I bought this computer? I’d hate to think that a company like Gateway would pull a fast one on their customers.

Question 2: If not, is ASUS a good brand?

Rick’s answer:  Hi Glenn. To answer your first question, you didn’t get ripped off. It’s common practice for third party manufacturers to supply the parts that are assembled into working PCs by the major computer companies, and that includes the motherboard.

In fact, the motherboards in most PCs were built by someone other than the company that ultimately assembles the computer and slaps their logo on it.

As for your second question, ASUS is one of the most highly regarded companies out there. They supply motherboards and other components to several computer manufacturers (as well as the ones that go into their own machines).

Bottom line:  In my opinion, you have no worries at all in regards to your ASUS motherboard.
