Facebook rumored to be developing a “Sympathize” button

facebook-logoHave you ever seen a post on Facebook in which one of your friends is relaying bad news (i.e. loss of a pet, diagnosis of a serious illness, etc.) and wanted to click the “Like” button, but you didn’t because you felt it would be inappropriate?

I think most of us have at one time or another, and it’s an awkward position to be in.

Well, there’s a rumor making the rounds that Facebook is planning to eliminate such awkward situations by developing a “Sympathize” button that will be displayed after each post. That way you would be able to choose between “Like” and “Sympathize” depending on the context of the post.

I’m not one to put much faith in rumors (especially when they originate on Facebook), but this one was started by a person in a position to know.

Exit question: If this rumor turns out to be true, could a “Dislike” button be next?
