Q&A: Can I turn off the sound my PC makes when it starts up?

Question from Arnold:  I’m an early riser and my wife always sleeps later than I do.

When I turn my HP laptop on in the mornings the sound it makes while it’s starting up sometimes wakes her up.

I’m getting tired of her being grumpy all day when that happens.

Is there a way to turn that sound off and make the laptop boot up silently?

Rick’s answer:  I can certainly understand why that sound would irritate your wife, Arnold.

Luckily, it’s very easy to disable the Startup sound on your laptop.

You didn’t mention whether your laptop is running Windows 10 or Windows 11, but it doesn’t really matter because the procedure is virtually the same for both. Just follow the steps below:

1 – Right-click on the Start button, then click Settings.

2 – Click Personalization.

3 – Click Themes.

4 – Click Sounds.

5 – Uncheck the box beside “Play Windows Startup sound”.

6 – Click Apply, then click OK.

That’s all there is to it. Your laptop should now start up without making any sounds that can awaken your sleeping wife.

I hope this helps, Arnold. Good luck!

Update from Arnold:  It did, Rick. Thanks for the info.
