Save big with online coupons and promo codes

Posted on December 23, 2012

Coupons have been a staple of the Sunday newspapers for decades, and dedicated “clippers” often save hundreds of dollars per month simply by investing a few minutes each week combing the papers for the best deals.

Few people know it, but coupons and “promo codes” can save shoppers big bucks online as well.

Some of the best online deals to be had are for virtual goods such as domain names and web hosting (I ALWAYS try to use a promo code when purchasing a domain name from Godaddy.com), but you’ll find numerous coupons promising great savings on tangible items such as clothing, computers and other goods as well.

Here are a few of the most popular websites offering coupons and promo codes for use at a variety of both online and offline retailers:

  • DontPayFull.com
  • RetailMeNot
  • Savings.com
  • TechBargains
  • NerdWallet
  • BradsDeals
  • DealCatcher

The best way to see what’s available is to visit each of the websites listed above and check the categories of retailers/products that interest you. Depending on the site, you might have to click a link to see the promo codes that apply to online shopping venues.

For coupons that apply to purchases at brick and mortar stores, simply print them out and take them with you the next time you hop in your car to go shopping.

Most online retailers that accept coupons or promo codes will have a box where you can enter them right underneath the “Total Cost” field on the order screen. Just copy and paste the applicable code into that box and you should see the discount applied to the total amount due immediately.

Be aware that some coupon codes won’t work for whatever reason (expired, not applicable to the purchase, etc.). If you enter a code that doesn’t work, go back to the coupon site (and the other sites if necessary) and try different codes until you find one that works.

Good luck, and happy shopping!
