Q&A: How do I convert a photo to black and white with Pixlr?

Posted on April 24, 2023

Question from Adelle:  I use an online photo editor called Pixlr and I really like it a lot. It’s hard to beat for the price in my opinion (it’s free lol).

Pixlr does most everything I need a photo editor to do, but I need to convert a certain photo to Black and White and I can’t find that option on the menu anywhere.

Surely it must have one. Can you tell me how to find it?

Rick’s answer:  I’m a huge fan of Pixlr too Adelle, and I use it whenever I happen to be using a PC that doesn’t have my regular image editor loaded on it.

To answer you question, there is no “Black and White” menu option in Pixlr, but you can still convert an image to something that’s very close to Black and White. Here’s how:

1 – Load the image you wish to convert into Pixlr.

2 – Click Adjustment>Desaturate.

The Desaturate tool removes all color saturation from the image, in effect giving you a photo that’s about as close to true Black and White as you can get.

I hope this helps, Adelle. Good luck!

By the way, for those who might not be familiar with Pixlr, it’s a fantastic online image editor that works extremely well on low-powered Windows PCs and Chromebooks.

Pixlr is a web-based app so there’s nothing to install on your local computer. What’s more, it doesn’t require a high powered CPU or tons of RAM.

When you need to use it all you have to do is launch your favorite web browser and visit www.Pixlr.com, then load the image you want to edit into the app and make your changes. And as mentioned above, it’s completely free!
