bitly-logo-gifIf you have an account with the URL shortening service Bitly, the company recommends that you log in to your account ASAP to change your password and reset your API key.

Of course this will only affect you if you actually have an account with Bitly. It’s entirely possible to use the service to shorten a URL without opening an account, and plenty of people do.

If you do have a Bitly account, follow these steps to change your password and reset your API key:

1 – Log in to your Bitly account.

2 – Click Your Settings.

3 – Select the Advanced tab.

4 – Click Reset next to “Legacy API key”.

5 – Write down your new API key and keep it handy.

6 – Select the Profile tab and change your password.

7 – Log into every application that uses your Bitly API key and change it. Disconnect and then reconnect each application after you have reset the API key. Be sure to verify that you haven’t skipped a connected account clicking the Connected Accounts tab under “Your Settings”.

That’s all there is to it. Good luck!
