Q&A: How can I open Finder using my Mac’s keyboard?

Posted on February 9, 2024

Question from Dharia:  I recently bought my first Mac (actually, a MacBook) and I have a question about it.

I loved how I could open File Explorer in Windows by pressing the Windows and E keys at the same time.

Is there a way to use the keyboard to open the Finder on a Mac?

I’m a touch-typist and I prefer using the keyboard instead of the mouse whenever possible.

Rick’s answer:  I have good news for you, Dharia.

You can indeed open your Mac’s Finder app using just the keyboard. Here’s how:

First, press the Option+Command+SpaceBar key combination to open the Finder Search Window.

In most cases you’ll be able to quickly access whatever it is you need to access right in the Finder Search Window via the links in the left-hand column and the toolbar at the top

That means you probably won’t even have to open the actual Finder app at all.

However, if you do need to open the Finder app you can easily do so from within the Finder Search Window. Simply press Command+N and the regular Finder app will open right up.

I hope this helps, Dharia. I wish you all the best with your new MacBook!

Update from Dharia:  Thanks, Rick. This is perfect.
