Question from Benjamin:  I need some advice, Rick.

I’ll soon be heading to the UK for a six week visit.

I’ll need a laptop to use while I work from my hotel room every day while I’m over there.

The problem is my laptop’s charger operates at 120 volts and there’s no switch to change it to 240 volts like there is with my desktop computer.

Is there any way I can use my existing laptop during my visit to the UK?

I really hate the thought of having to buy a laptop over there just to use for six weeks!

Rick’s answer: That’s a great question Benjamin, and I have a couple of possible solutions for you:

1 – You didn’t mention the brand of your laptop, but if its a brand that’s popular in the UK you could probably go to a computer store once you get there and buy a replacement charger for use during your stay.

2 – You can buy a power adapter to make the voltage conversion for you.

For example, Amazon sells this handy power adapter that will automatically reduce the voltage from 240 to 120. It also comes with a US to UK adapter for the plug (plus adapters for other countries as well).

Personally, I would recommend going with option #2 for the following reasons:

1 – You won’t have to scramble around searching for a replacement charger that’ll work with your laptop after you get to the UK.

2 – You’ll also be able to use this adapter to power any other small American appliances you end up taking with you on your trip.

3 – You’ll also be able to use this adapter to power your laptop and other devices in other countries should you decide to travel outside the UK while you’re over there.

4 – This adapter will also charge your mobile devices during your travels.

So there you have it. Now you know you CAN use your own existing laptop while you’re visiting the UK and other European countries with the help of a simply power adapter.

And by the way, this applies to other non-European countries as well.

In fact, regardless of where you plan to travel on our wonderful planet you’re sure to find a power adapter that will allow you to use your laptop and other gadgets while you’re there!

I hope you have a great time during your stay in the UK, Benjamin. Good luck!

Update from Benjamin: Solution #2 looks perfect for me, Rick. I’m going to order one right now! Thanks for your help.
