Question from Stella H.: Our state will be observing its annual back-to-school “Tax Free Weekend” starting this Friday.
I know that certain items can be purchased tax-free at local stores during Tax-Free Weekend, but what about things we buy online at Amazon?
I usually buy most of my kids’ back-to-school stuff from Walmart to take advantage of the tax savings, but there are a few relatively expensive items I’d prefer to buy from Amazon if I can still get the tax savings.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Rick’s answer: That’s a great question, Stella. And as luck would have it, the answer is YES!
As explained on this page, Amazon indeed observes local sales tax holidays on purchases of qualifying items.
Whether your child needs a new pair of socks, a new laptop or anything in between, you can purchase it from Amazon and pay no sales tax during your locality’s Tax-Free Weekend (as long as the purchased item qualifies of course).
The specific categories of items that qualify for the temporary sales tax exemption vary from state to state, but you should be able to find a list of qualifying items in your state by simply typing this into Google:
items that qualify for tax free weekend in [your state]
For example, if I wanted to find out which items qualify in my home state of Virginia I would type the following:
items that qualify for tax free weekend in Virginia
The very first search result would take me to this list of all the items I could buy sales tax-free in Virginia during Tax Free Weekend.
Pretty simple, right?
If you’re wondering when (or if) your state has a Tax-Free weekend in 2020 you’ll find the answer right here.
Bottom line: You don’t have to shop locally just to take advantage of your state’s Tax-Free Weekend. You can take advantage of the tax savings when you shop at Amazon as well!
I hope this helps, Stella. Good luck!
